The Beginnings of Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy

Physiotherapy and occupational therapy first began to be practiced in the 1880s. Mary McMillan, a pioneer in the profession, was the first physiotherapist in the United States. In 1921, she founded the American Physiotherapy Association. Her remarkable work during the two world wars established the basis for the field and inspired a new generation of therapists.

Canada’s first course in physiotherapy was taught in 1917. In 1954, Dr. Gingras founded the École de réadaptation de l’Université de Montréal. Physiotherapy and occupational therapy were originally taught as part of the same course, but have been taught separately since the 1980s, resulting in two distinct, yet complementary, specialized approaches. Nowadays, Mc Gill University, the Université de Montréal, the Université Laval à Québec, Ottawa Université et the Université de Sherbrooke offer both programs, while the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières has an Occupational Therapy program.

Since 2008, new graduates in these fields must hold a professional master’s degree in either physiotherapy or occupational therapy in order to practice. Both professions are governed by a professional order to protect the public and ensure the quality of the services provided: the Ordre professionnel de la physiothérapie du Québec (OPPQ) and the Ordre des Ergothérapeutes du Québec (OEQ).
